The Old Testament makes up about 75% of the Bible. While you can read it in 90 days, a 1-year duration provides a much more manageable pace of about 3 chapters per day.

Many people find it very helpful because the historical books (Kings/Chronicles) provide the context for the Prophets. Reading them together chronologically makes the Prophets much easier to understand.
